I agree I won't be visiting that site either. I was subscribed to the feed but unsubscribed right after that. I know it's natural for cats to play with mice, lizards and stuff like that before the kill and while. But, to take pictures of it? Come on.
I am sorry, but you were a tad abusive to the owner of that blog. She is 100% entitled to journal as she wills. What she did is no more cruel than any wildlife photographer photographing in nature. She took the lizard away from Daisy and it was over. She did not stage the follow-up photo and you accused her of removing comments, which she did not. The bottom line is that it is her site and you are 100% capable of clicking the little X in the upper right hand corner, if you so wish to.
The cat caught a lizard, she took a couple photos and pulled the lizard away. Daisy has caught and killed other lizards that get into the home before. I would feel differently if I thought she had given the lizard to Daisy, but that was not what happened. For the record, I'm not a friend of the owner of the sites, I am a fan. I was not asked to come here. This is not the black and white issue you make it out to be. While Daisy is anthropomorphised in the blog, she is still a cat with instincts. I understand you have the right to post as you will in your blog and I support you, but you were quite rude in Daisy's blog and that's not a good thing. I'm not trying to come down on you, or be mean. I just think you were hurtful in your effort to try to stop hurt.
I was not harsh nor was I rude. I posted the following only:
Anonymous pandora said... Correct me if I am wrong, but Sabriena did state that cats do catch and play with prey. I believe what her post was based upon was your owner making a photo opp on it and not the natural occurrence of prey and predator. Clearly the basis of her post was missed. How is that harsh or really rude? I did not accuse the owner of anything, I stated it was my belief. That is not accusatory. It is a persona belief. I also stated in my blog I thought it was a cute site. I guess it shows that one should not state their views on another blog or site without this type of retaliatory comment. I don't see how my posting was hurtful.
Cats are predators.
They do hunt, capture and kill their prey. I have lived with cats for all my life. So has my family. Here in Southern California we also have lizards. Penny the pup has never bothered the numerous lizards. Serena the cat watches them in the window just as she watches the birds. To have a cat hunt, capture and parade their 'kill' on a webpage does seem cruel.
That is disgusting. I don't understand why a person would post something like that unless they had something seriously wrong in their head. Good for you for taking a stand and not visiting anymore.
People are sick.
It is good that you stood up and spoke your voice on this. I think people that torture animals are phsycopaths and need to seek caounseling immediately.
I read this too. I was really bothered by the whole thing. And to make it worse, there was a poll where we were suppose to guess the lizards fate. Ugh. I didn't post.. just dropped, checked their traffic and left... I probably should have posted though.
We had lizards get into our home in Texas all the time. I never let my cats play with them. We picked them up and put them back outside. It bothered me when I saw this. Cats are used on farm to control pests and it is in their nature, but this is a house cat that clearly is well taken care of and has plenty of toys to simulate catching prey.
The cat did what came naturally to it. The owner took photos until it escalated to something that was going to get the lizard hurt, then took it outside and let it go.
It's cat's nature to do what the cat did. The lizard wasn't hurt -- it's apparent to me that the cat is declawed so batting it around with it's paws wasn't going to hurt it. It wasn't animal cruelty -- it was animal nature. ê¿ê
We have a cat who catches mice around our house - I mean, either the cat is going to, or we're setting traps. Mice poop everywhere and if they don't stay in the basement they better watch out.
That said, I wouldn't allow my cat to play with a mouse in front of me.. I'd try to catch it and put it out (the mouse) and I certainly wouldn't film it. I use to have lizards (those that have been up on my blog should not be surprised by that, lol).. What bothered me, even if the lizard wasn't physically hurt - is what it "felt".. it must have been very scared in the first place to bite at the cat. Anyway.. it's the softy in me that whines.
I guess the cat must have had its teeth removed also. I mean clearly with the lizard hanging out its mouth, the cat did not bite it just gummed it, right? The cat getting the lizard was animal nature. The owner making a photo opp out of it was and is animal cruelty. The lizard feels pain also.
Okay...so I have a question.
If she took pictures of a dog attacking her cat..would that be okay? If she made a post, did the cat live or die, would that still be okay? I mean, that's animal nature too.
I like lizards, maybe because they're a rare site here in the big city, but I too was a bit put off by that post. I was just glad to read that the lizard survived and was apparently unharmed, although a bit traumatized.
Thass Hilarious!!
I proly shouldn't Laff but i was NOT expecting that*
My partner's cat occasionally catches things and brings them home, sometimes not yet dead. As son as i realise it has something, I never allow it to play with it and either release it or put it out of its misery.
I tend to think that owners of cats (and I am one myself) tend to forget that the cat isn't a cute playful creature, but a rough killing machine especially for a tiny animal that can easily die of fright, or an infection from a cat bite.
In the end it was lucky, it met up with a predator and escaped, still alive. How many other lizards, mice and rodents died today. You can't mourn them all.
No, you can't mourn them all but THAT IS NOT THE POINT. I can't believe how many people are actually missing the point here.
The owner PHOTOGRAPHED this cat doing this. Whether it was harmed or not you cannot really tell. Who is going to honestly say on their website, "Oh the lizard was killed while I watched it and I got some great photos of my cat killing/hurting this lizard. Good for me. I'm so fantastic."
Hail, Sabriena!
Quite right. I do not know the website or the website's URL - but you are quite right. The problem is not in the cat being a cat but is in it being photographed with its 'kill' and then the photo being posted online. Whole thing seems very weird to me.
Yet it's not weird at all to have stuff on TV that shows far worse? You can sit down and watch murders, dead bodies and blood spatter from 8:PM onwards. But, a lizard... that's different. Not entertaining enough?
I am a little confused as to your post. I didn't think it was entertaining and I think that others felt the same way. Not everything that you listed am I entertained with either. I see apples and oranges here. What is entertainment to some is horror to others
