Since I am not very political I see today as just another day that a new president is taking over. To me the celebrations are a tad bit out of control.

Reading an article yesterday that this is going to be one of the most expensive inauguration's ever it makes me think. If our country is struggling so very hard to pull out of our situation financially, why the extravagant expenses then? How about cutting back on some of those celebrations and put the money to good use? To me it is a waste of money, plain and simple.

Now I totally understand that this is a major historical change seeing a part African American in office. Yes, that is change. Does not change the racism that is still alive and well in our daily lives. That has not changed at all. Nor will it. Takes more than one man being elected to change that, if it ever will.

Personally I think that people are placing way to much on this one person to be a miracle worker or dare I say a messiah? What happens if all the promises that were made does not come true? How will people that have placed this man on a pedestal feel then? Excuses will be made to fit the circumstance probably. There is a danger placing mortals on pedestals.

I have a more wait and see attitude. Seen to many presidents come and go that promised the world before getting into office only to leave the public empty handed and disillusioned. He has a hard task at hand and I hope that he is able to turn things around. BUT it will not be accomplished over night like some feel it will. Took many years to get here, so it will take many years to be fixed.

I have high hopes for Obama. When times get really dire, people really need hope. Sure, it might be unrealistic, but better to have hope then despair. And right now there is a lot of despair out there.

I was actually a huge supporter of yesterday's parties, balls and concerts. All events were privately funded, and I think it was a great way to give thousands of people a paycheck.

I don't know your political affiliation, but it seems that quite a few people calling Obama the messiah are the people who didn't vote for him.

I was not calling him a messiah per say, it is the way in which people are talking about him. On the contrary, those people that do not really like him have been known to depict him as the anti christ and not a messiah.
As I stated I hope that he does do what he has stated. I am neither for nor against him in any way.

In some respects You are correct.
Yet - and this is how I see this -
This is not only a celebration of the
first "african-american' as president -
it is also a way for the common citizens of this democratic republic to
participate in the orderly and peaceful
change of governmental leadership.
This is not Africa where change comes
from the bullet - this is America where
change comes (one would hope!) from the
ballot. It is not so much a celebration
of a mortal 'messiah' as it is - especially in this time and place case -
the repudiation and revocation of the
previous Bush Administration.

That - and there is this -
This only happens every four years.
For some this is their annual vacation
and trip to see and experience history happen. Though at 28 degrees CNN did me very well indeed! I also found good coverage over on C-Span. I can see your points on the fiscal expenses -
but to deny the american common man and woman this singular chance to
participate and share in this moment
of history seems a bit tightwad.
Then again - I'm just the Paganus around here. I fumble and bumble about to a slightly different beat.
